Born and raised in South Korea, I received my BFA from the School of Fine Arts, Hong-ik University, in Seoul. The main theme of my work, which is illustrative and playful, is the healing power of a mother’s love and sacrifice, and the healing power of art. I use cumulative layers of acrylic-gouache on a wood panel, emulating traditional Korean brush techniques and patterns, aiming for a distinctly non-Western texture and palette. I first sand the surface of wood panels and put down a base layer with black gesso. Then I pencil in the outline of my composition. I then paint with many layers of acrylic gouache using brush techniques and palettes inspired by Asian painting and art. Yooyoung Amy OhShort biography
